  5. torment; in Madrid. Born in Dublin, Bacon spent most of his life
  6. in London, where he created an emblem for the postwar mood of
  7. dissatisfaction with his smeared and twisted figures who writhe
  8. in brightly colored confinements. Although he was regarded as
  9. one of the great modern artists, his unyielding gloom was not
  10. to every critic's taste.
